South Essex Community School Ltd, is planning to open a Free School for children aged between 14 and 19 who, for various reasons cannot attend mainstream schools. These reasons might include, but are not limited to long-term illness, behaviour issues, exclusions or teenage parenthood. The school, known as the Southend YMCA Community School, has been conceived by Southend YMCA, a local charity with eighteen years experience in delivering effective, quality services to vulnerable young people. The overriding aim of the charity is to provide vulnerable and disadvantaged young people with the experiences and opportunities that other young people receive as a norm. Southend YMCA has been providing support for pupils between the ages of 14-16 for over 5 years and for those aged 16-19 for more than ten. We are currently working with 22 pupils aged 14-16 and have a strong track record of success in enabling pupils who face barriers to thrive despite challenging backgrounds.
